Rural Health Service Corps: 2009 Positions Available

2009 Full-Time Position

Full-time members provide 1710 hours of service and serve full time for 11-12 months.  Living allowance ($11,800), education award ($4,725), health insurance and college loan forbearance available. 

 

The full-time position that is currently available is as follows:

 

    Health Promotion Specialist - Position with the Broome County Office for Aging.

    The Health Promotion Specialist assists with the development, marketing and

    implementation of chronic health disease management programs such as Mission

    Meltaway and Positive Aging.  The Health Promotion Specialist also assists with

    other health promotion activities that encourage senior citizens to participate in

    healthy behaviors, such as Senior Games and nutrition education seminars.  The

    Health Promotion Specialist will also assist in recruiting volunteers to serve as

    facilitators of health promotion activities and to deliver home-delivered meals to

    community elders.

College loan deferment is available.  There is no health insurance provided for part-time positions. 

 

The part-time positions currently available are as follows:

  1. Community Food Project Associate: One 907-hour position with the Rural Health Network of South Central NY.  The Community Food Project Associate will support regional collaboration working to develop local food systems to realize health, environmental, food security and economic benefits.  Projects and initiatives include farm to school, improving access to locally produced food for all, and food and farming education.  This service involves developing written materials, website support, etc.
     
  2. Health Access Associate: One 907-hour position with SUNY Upstate Medical University.  The Health Care Access Counselor assists uninsured patients served by the Dr. Garabed A. Fattal Community Free Clinic in determining health insurance and other services they may be eligible for. The Health Care Access Counselor uses a computerized screening tool to determine patient eligibility.
     

2009-2010 Part-Time Education Award Only Positions

Part-time AmeriCorps members must complete their service by June 30, 2011.  

Education award and college loan forbearance available.  Members will be matched with a community-level project.  The member will serve 303 hours or 455 hours, as scheduled with the partner organization.  If needed, these hours can be used to fulfill an academic internship requirement or simply to gain professional experience.

Upon completion of hours within the allotted timeframe, the member will receive an Education Award as specified below:

  1. Health Promotion Associate: Position with the Rural Health Network of South Central NY.  The Health Promotion Associate will support and assist with community based wellness programs, local foods/nutrition projects and rural schools health initiatives. This is a 455 hour position.
     

As we develop these positions, more opportunities will become available.  New positions will be posted when the opportunities become available during the 2009-2010 year.

The mission of the Rural Health Network of South Central New York (RHNSCNY) is to promote and improve the health of rural communities and strengthen each community's capacity to respond to health needs by reducing barriers and improving access and use of health and human services through advocacy, communication and partnerships."  The RHNSCNY serves Delaware, Tioga and rural Broome County.
