In 1996, the New York
State Health Care Reform Act was enacted and 7 million dollars became
available annually, through grant applications, for the development
of Rural Health Networks within the state of New York.
One year later, in July
of 1997, Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Hospital and United Health
Services Hospitals, along with several key health, human service
and community partners, proposed the development of a Rural Health
Network of South Central New York to serve rural residents in Delaware,
Tioga and Broome Counties. The founding members consulted other
network and coalition models with known successful strategies in
order to develop creative solutions for improvement in individual
health and to provide increased access to healthcare services to
all residents in this region. In 1998, the Rural Health Network
of South Central New York was incorporated.
In the spring of 2003, the Rural Health Network of SCNY unveiled a
new Strategic Plan that will guide the organization through 2006.
Begun in 2002, as an outcome of a Board Retreat and follow-up
Committee and Board discussions, the Strategic Plan is a shared and
evolving road map for the Board of Directors, Committees of the
Network, staff, and community partners, as we all work together for
the benefit of residents in rural communities.
