Once during the year, Medicare beneficiaries have the opportunity to enroll in or switch to a different Medicare Part D prescription drug plan. This open enrollment period beings November 15 and ends December 31. The coverage you select during this period becomes effective January 1, 2010.
It is important to know that Medicare Part D plans are allowed to change their premiums, co-pays, the list of drugs they will cover, and/or drug tier levels for the new year. This means that if you have a current Part D plan, it might not provide the same coverage in 2010.
For help comparing plans before enrolling in one for the first time, or before switching from your current plan, visit Medicare's website at www.medicare.gov or call 1-800-Medicare. In addition, local assistance with Medicare Part D plans and other Medicare issues is available to Broome County residents by calling Action for Older Persons at 722-1251.
