Youngsters should wear safety helmets for biking, skateboarding, rollerblading, horseback riding and other fast-paced activities. This summer, United Health Services Hospitals began a reward program for pediatric patients who arrive at the Emergency Department with injuries from one of those activities while they were wearing a helmet.
The patients receive a T-shirt that reads: "Ride, Glide or Slide, I always wear my helmet" and a drawstring backpack. "We're sending the message that we're sorry they were injured, but we are proud that they were wearing a helmet, because without that helmet they could have been more seriously hurt," says Cathy Page, RN, ED-Educator. Cathy got the idea for the reward program from a colleague at an Emergency Nurses' Association national conference.
The helmet reward program is part of the ongoing Safety Awareness Program at United Health Services. The program also organizes mock DWI accidents at local high schools and coordinates the "Let's Not Meet By Accident" community outreach education program.
