"Exercise is good for your heart." "Exercise helps you look better." These are true statements, but there are other reasons to exercise. Exercise can curb your risk of cancer including colon and breast cancer, leukemia and lymphoma. Exercise creates new brain cells that boost your memory, increase your ability to make decisions and react to situations, and increase your ability to learn. It can even hold off the onset of Alzheimer's disease. Exercise boosts insulin sensitivity. Resistance to insulin is part of the aging process and is a major contributor to Type 2 diabetes. Helping your body to stay sensitive to insulin can prevent diabetes. Exercise prevents visceral fat gain. This is the fat that builds up around the organs deep inside our belly and is linked to diabetes and heart disease. If you want to reap these benefits, look great, and live a longer, more independent life, start exercising today! You have many options including the exercise equipment at Broome West, Eastern Broome, and Northerner Broome Senior Centers. They are available during the hours each center is open and there is no charge to use them. Jocelyn from the Office for Aging will be available to demonstrate how to use the exercise equipment, free weights, and perform simple stretches during the following times:
Broome West Senior Center Thursday, February 4, 9:30 – 11:00 am Wednesday, February 10, 1:00 – 2:00 pm Monday, February 22, 10:00 – 11:30 am
