March is National Nutrition Month

The purpose of National Nutrition Month is a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the American Dietetics Association. The campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. This campaign was initiated in March 1973 as a week long event, which became a month-long observance in 1980 in response to growing public interest in nutrition. The campaign is designed to focus attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. National Nutrition Month also promotes Registered Dietitians as the most valuable and credible source of timely, scientifically based food and nutrition information. The theme this year is "Nutrition from the Ground Up" Start with the basics. Eating right doesn't have to be complicated. A healthy eating plan emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat or fat-free dairy and includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, and nuts. A healthy eating plan also is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt, and added sugar. Make calories count by thinking nutrient-rich rather than "good" or "bad" foods. Most food choices should be packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other nutrients – and lower in calories. Be aware of portion sizes. Even low-calorie foods can add up when portions are larger than you think. Focus on eating a wide variety of foods from all food groups. Fruits and vegetables can be fresh, canned, or frozen. Look for locally grown produce that is in season. Balancing physical activity and a healthful diet is your best recipe for managing weight and promoting overall health and fitness. Set a goal to be physically active in some form, at least 30 minutes every day. Delaware County Office for the Aging offers the assistance of a Registered Dietitian to seniors. This is a wonderful benefit and can be taken advantage of either by contacting the office in Delhi, 607-746-6333, or at your congregate meal site. Nutrition Programs are offered six times per year; this is an excellent opportunity to educate yourself and also have any nutrition related questions answered at the same time you have a delicious, nutritious meal. Happy Nutrition Month and Good Eating!!
